ESSENTIAL OIL OF THE MONTH: LEMON

Lemon-Essential-Oil

LEMON (citrus x limon)

A mature lemon tree can produce as many as 1200 fruits in one year, therefore the yield is high – although this can be affected by the climatic conditions and the time of year that the lemons are harvested.

It takes about 2500-3000 of the fruits to produce a kilo of oil, which is cold pressed from the rind of the fruit using sponges which are, in turn, squeezed to obtain the oil.  The colour of the oil appears clear to yellow, or can even have a green hue.

Lemon oil has effective antibacterial properties and, with astringent qualities, is beneficial for skin types that tend to be greasy or congested. With its uplifting, citrus aroma, Lemon oil makes an ideal room freshener too.

Lemon Oil blends well with Ginger, Lavender and Lemon Tea Tree.

Here are some recipes for you to try:

SKIN BOOSTER – FOR GREASY / CONGESTED SKIN

Lemon                          4 drops

Cypress                        7 drops

Grapefruit                     3 drops

Juniper                          1 drop

Blend the above oils with 30mls (three tablespoons) of peach kernel oil and massage into the skin.  Use morning and night as part of your skin care regime, to help unblock pores and balance the skin.

CONDITIONING HAIR OIL FOR BLONDES

Lemon                           7 drops

Chamomile Roman         1 drop

Ylang-Ylang                  2 drops

Blend the above oils with 10mls of Jojoba oil and 10mls of Sweet Almond oil (one tablespoon of each), then apply to dry hair.  Massage through to the ends, wrap a warm towel around the head and leave for two hours.  Add shampoo directly to the oiled hair and massage well. Rinse thoroughly.  This is a fabulous intensive treatment that can be used weekly to condition the hair, giving it a natural, healthy sheen.

TO HELP REDUCE FLUID RETENTION

Lemon                           5 drops

Black Pepper                7 drops

Geranium                      3 drops

To reduce bloating, blend the above oils with 30mls of Grapeseed oil (three tablespoons) and massage into areas where fluid is being held, applying only a light pressure.
